One of the largest and most magnificent forts in India, Mehrangarh Fort is located in the ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Built by Rao Jodha in the 15th century, this fort stands on a perpendicular cliff, about 410 feet above the surrounding skyline. The foundation of Mehrangarh Fort was laid on May 12, 1459, by Rao Jodha, the ruler of the Rathore clan of Marwar. Prior to this, the Rathore capital was Mandor, but it was deemed insecure against enemy incursions. Consequently, Rao Jodha decided to shift his capital and build a secured fort on this isolated, steep rocky hill known as ‘Chiriya Toonk‘ (the mountain of birds).
The fort was named ‘Mehrangarh‘, meaning the ‘Fort of the Sun’, reflecting the Rathore dynasty’s claim of descent from the Sun God. According to local history, the foundation stone was laid by the revered female saint, Karni Mata. Another intriguing legend suggests that to ensure the invincibility and prosperity of the structure, a man named ‘Rajaram Meghwal’ voluntarily sacrificed his life and was buried alive in the foundations; a memorial dedicated to him still stands inside the fort.
