Detailed History
According to historical records, the walled city of Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) originally featured 14 historical gates. These gates provided security to the capital and connected the walled city to various trade routes and regional destinations.
Over time and through rapid urbanization, several of these gates were destroyed. Today, out of the original 14 gates of Shahjahanabad, only 5 major historical gates remain intact:
- Delhi Gate :– Located at the southern end of Old Delhi, connecting Old Delhi with New Delhi.
- Ajmeri Gate :– Built on the southwest road leading toward the city of Ajmer.
- Kashmiri Gate :– Situated on the northern side leading toward Kashmir, which served as a major battleground during the Revolt of 1857.
- Turkman Gate :– Named after the revered Sufi saint, Shah Turkman Bayabani.
- Nigambodh Gate :– Located near the historic Nigambodh Ghat along the banks of the Yamuna River.
(Other historic gates such as Lahori Gate, Mori Gate, Kabuli Gate, and Patthar Ghati Gate no longer exist or remain only in historical records.)

- By Metro :– The ‘Kashmiri Gate Metro Station’ provides direct access to Kashmiri Gate, while the ‘Delhi Gate Metro Station‘ drops you right at Delhi Gate. Ajmeri Gate is located adjacent to New Delhi Railway Station.
- Photography Spots :– The exterior facades of Kashmiri Gate and Ajmeri Gate offer impressive backgrounds for historical architectural photography.
