Achalgarh Fort was originally constructed in the 9th century by the rulers of the Paramara Dynasty to guard the regional borders. Centuries later, in 1452 AD, the legendary ruler of Mewar, Rana Kumbha, completely reconstructed and fortified the structure, naming it ‘Achalgarh’, which translates to “the immovable fort.”
Out of the 32 defensive fortresses built or renovated by Rana Kumbha to protect Mewar, Achalgarh served as a critical military outpost. The site also holds immense religious significance; situated right at the foothills of the fort is the revered Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple, where the toe of Lord Shiva is traditionally worshipped.

The structural layout of Achalgarh Fort is a stellar example of classical Rajput military architecture. The primary entrance to the fortress is the monumental ‘Hanuman Pol’, which features large stone idols of Lord Hanuman on either side for protection. As you ascend further into the complex, you pass through two more defensive gateways known as ‘Champa Pol’ and ‘Bhairav Pol’.
