Amer Fort is one of the most significant and magnificent forts in Rajasthan. It is situated on the high hills of the Aravalli range, approximately 11 kilometers from Jaipur city. Its construction was commissioned in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I, who was one of the most trusted generals of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Later, Mirza Raja Jai Singh and Sawai Jai Singh made several expansions. This fort remained the capital of the Kachwaha Rajputs for centuries until Sawai Jai Singh founded Jaipur city in 1727. UNESCO has declared it a ‘World Heritage Site‘ due to its historical and cultural importance.
Detailed Architecture
Exterior Architecture :– Amer Fort is an excellent confluence of Hindu and Mughal architecture. From the outside, the fort appears very rugged and invincible due to its strong ramparts made of red sandstone and white marble. The main gate of the fort is called ‘Suraj Pol’ (Sun Gate). The Maota Lake located at the base of the fort adds to its immense beauty.
Interior Architecture :– The interior of the fort is known for its delicate carvings and luxury.
- Ganesh Pol :– This is the main entrance to the inner palaces, world-famous for its beautiful paintings and carvings.
- Sheesh Mahal :– Also known as the ‘Palace of Mirrors‘. Its walls and ceiling are adorned with tiny mirror pieces imported from Belgium.
- Diwan-i-Khas and Diwan-i-Aam :– These were the courts built for special guests and the general public, respectively.
- Sukh Niwas :– Here, a system similar to ‘air conditioning‘ was created in ancient times through sandalwood doors and water pipelines.

- Visiting Time :– 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. There are different timings for the Light and Sound Show at night.
- How to Reach :– You can reach Amer by taking a taxi, auto, or bus from Jaipur Airport (25 km) or the Railway Station (12 km). You can choose to walk, take an elephant ride, or a jeep to go up to the fort.

When you look at the ceilings of the Sheesh Mahal, you realize the hard work of ancient craftsmen. My advice is to visit it during the evening; when the setting sun’s light falls on its walls, it shines like gold.

- The entire hall of Sheesh Mahal can be illuminated by lighting just two candles inside.
- In the Shila Mata Temple here, worship is still performed with traditional rituals; the idol was brought from Bengal by Raja Man Singh.
