Detailed History
Chittorgarh Fort is not just one of the largest in Rajasthan but across all of India. It stands as a timeless witness to the sagas of bravery, sacrifice, and glorious history. It is believed to have been built in the 7th century by the Mauryan ruler Chitrangad Mori, after which it remained under the Sisodia Rajputs of Mewar for centuries. The fort is known for its three major historic ‘Jauhars‘ and fierce battles, where the sacrifices of Queen Padmini and Queen Karnavati are still remembered. Situated at a height of 180 meters on the Aravalli hills, this fort is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Detailed Architecture
Exterior Architecture :– The fort is spread in a fish-shaped layout over a vast area of nearly 700 acres. To ensure its security, seven massive gateways (Pols) were built, including Padan Pol, Bhairav Pol, Hanuman Pol, Ganesh Pol, Jodla Pol, Laxman Pol, and the main Ram Pol. Its walls are so wide and strong that chariots could once be driven atop them.
Interior Architecture :– The fort houses several magnificent palaces, temples, and victory monuments.
- Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower) :– This 9-story grand tower was built by Maharana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over the Sultan of Malwa. Its walls are intricately carved with images of Hindu deities.
- Kirti Stambh :– Dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara, Adinath Ji, it is famous for its fine craftsmanship.
- Padmini Palace :– This palace is built amidst a reservoir, where the reflection of Queen Padmini’s beauty was shown to Alauddin Khilji through a mirror.
- Kumbha Palace :– The oldest part of the fort, where the rulers of Mewar once resided, and the famous Meera Bai temple is situated nearby.

- Ticket :– ₹40 for Indian tourists, ₹600 for foreign tourists. Nominal charges for children.
- Visiting Time :– 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It takes at least 4-5 hours to explore the entire fort.
- How to Reach :– The fort is just 5-6 km from Chittorgarh Railway Station, with easy access to autos and taxis. Udaipur Airport is approximately 95 km away.
- Photography Spots :– The peak of Vijay Stambh, the reflection of Padmini Palace, and views of Gaumukh Kund are perfect for photography.
- Local Taste :– ‘Laal Maas‘ and local ‘Mirchi Vada‘ are very famous in Chittorgarh.
- Famous Market :– At the foot of the fort, Sadar Bazaar offers handicrafts, marble statues, and colorful Jaipuri sarees.

This fort teaches us that standing up for honor and the motherland is the ultimate glory. Standing near Vijay Stambh and looking down at the city, the feeling of Rajputana grandeur is difficult to put into words.
