Mehrangarh Fort is situated in Jodhpur city, Rajasthan, and is counted among the largest forts in India. Its construction was commissioned in 1459 by Rao Jodha when he shifted his capital from Mandore. The fort is built on a 410-foot-high vertical cliff known as ‘Chidiyatunk‘. The history of this fort is filled with tales of valor and struggle, but due to its height and strength, it was never fully conquered. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites, this fort is a symbol of the power of the Rathore rulers of Marwar.

Detailed Architecture

Exterior Architecture :– The fort’s walls are 36 meters high and 21 meters wide, making it extremely secure. There are seven entry gates, with ‘Jai Pol‘ (built by Maharaja Man Singh) and ‘Loha Pol‘ being the most famous. Handprints of queens are still visible on Loha Pol, placed there before they performed Sati.

Interior Architecture :– The interior of the fort is adorned with fine carvings and luxurious palaces.

  • Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) :– The ceiling and walls here feature a stunning blend of gold polish and seashell work.
  • Phool Mahal (Flower Palace) :– This was the King’s private chamber, decorated with real gold leaf work.
  • Sheesh Mahal :– The mirror work here is different and more intricate than in other forts.
  • Museum :– It houses a vast collection of palanquins, elephant howdahs, weapons, and paintings from the Rajputana era.

  • Ticket :– ₹100-₹200 for Indian tourists, ₹600 for foreign tourists. There is an extra charge for using the elevator.
  • Visiting Time :– 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • How to Reach :– The fort is about 5-6 km from Jodhpur Railway Station or Bus Stand. You can easily reach by auto, taxi, or cab. Jodhpur also has its own airport.
  • Photography Spots :– The view of the ‘Blue City’ from the fort ramparts is the most beautiful. Also, the area around Chamunda Mata Temple.
  • Local Taste :– Must try Jodhpur’s famous ‘Mirchi Vada‘, ‘Pyaz Kachori‘, and ‘Mawa Kachori‘ outside the fort.
  • Famous Market :The ‘Clock Tower’ (Ghanta Ghar) market near the fort is famous for handicrafts and spices.

​Looking at the vastness of Mehrangarh, it feels as if it has grown out of the hill itself. When you stand on its ramparts and look down at the blue buildings of Jodhpur, the view is magical. This fort is as artistic and delicate from the inside as it is rugged from the outside. Seeing the old tools and palanquins in its gallery takes you back to that era for a moment.

  • A person named ‘Rajaram Meghwal‘ was voluntarily buried alive in the foundation of this fort to ensure it remained invincible.
  • Several scenes from the famous Hollywood movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ were filmed here.
