Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is one of the most sacred spots in Varanasi. It is believed that the great saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas established this temple in the 16th century. Legend says he had a divine vision of Lord Hanuman at this very spot. ‘Sankat Mochan‘ translates to ‘Reliever of Troubles‘. Since its inception, it has been a beacon of hope for millions. In 1982, the temple’s administration was modernized under the leadership of Mahant Veer Bhadra Mishra, continuing the legacy of spiritual service.
Exterior Architecture Description :-
The exterior of the temple is simple yet elegant, emphasizing spiritual peace over ornate display. It is surrounded by high boundary walls and lush greenery, creating a serene micro-climate. The temple spire follows the traditional North Indian Nagara style. The entrance is well-guarded, and unlike other crowded shrines, the outer complex offers a spacious and clean environment for devotees.
Interior Architecture Description :-
The interior features a large courtyard leading to the sanctum sanctorum. The idol of Lord Hanuman is made of clay and faces the direction of Lord Rama. The walls are inscribed with verses and scenes from the Ramayana. The atmosphere inside is charged with chants and the fragrance of incense. A unique feature is the presence of numerous monkeys, who coexist peacefully with the visitors, regarded as living symbols of the deity.
