Situated in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, Jalaun district is a center of historical and mythological legends. The district is named after Sage Jalan, who performed rigorous penance here. The headquarters of the district is located in ‘Orai‘. In mythological times, it was part of King Rantidev’s empire. During the medieval period, it was under the rule of Marathas and Bundela kings. The town of ‘Kalpi’ is especially significant as the birthplace of Birbal. During the 1857 freedom struggle, the warriors of Kalpi fought alongside Rani Lakshmibai against British rule.
