Detailed History
The New Vishwanath Temple, popularly known as BHU VT or Birla Temple, is located within the prestigious Banaras Hindu University campus. The idea for this temple was conceived by the university’s founder, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. He envisioned a temple open to all, regardless of caste or creed. Construction began in 1931 by the industrialist Birla family and took about 35 years to complete. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is considered a grand replica of the original Kashi Vishwanath temple.
Exterior Architecture Description
The exterior of the temple is breathtaking, crafted entirely from premium white and cream marble. Its most prominent feature is the majestic spire (Shikhara), which stands at a height of approximately 252 feet (77 meters). It is one of the tallest temple towers in the world. The temple is surrounded by sprawling lawns and wide pathways, following the Nagara style of architecture, which adds to its royal and serene appearance.
Interior Architecture Description
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a massive marble hall. The interior walls are uniquely engraved with all 18 chapters of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Additionally, verses from the Ramayana and other sacred Hindu texts are inscribed across the walls. The center of the sanctum sanctorum houses the Shiva Lingam. The temple is double-storied; the ground floor is dedicated to Lord Shiva, while the upper floor houses other deities. The acoustics and the vastness of the hall provide a perfect environment for meditation.

In my view, the New Vishwanath Temple is the most organized and peaceful shrine in Varanasi. While the old city’s lanes have their own charm, the openness of the BHU campus offers a refreshing spiritual experience. The sight of the white marble spire against the blue sky is truly a meditative experience.
