Detailed History
Located on the coast of Puri, Odisha, the Shree Jagannath Temple is one of the four sacred ‘Char Dham‘ pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Construction was initiated by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Ganga Dynasty in the 12th century and completed by King Anangabhima Deva. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (Lord Vishnu), along with Balabhadra and Subhadra, it is globally renowned for the annual ‘Ratha Yatra‘.
Detailed Architecture
- Exterior :– A classic example of ‘Kalinga Architecture‘. The temple’s apex features the ‘Neelachakra‘, made of eight metals. The main entrance, ‘Singhadwara‘ (Lion Gate), is guarded by two massive lion statues. The main temple tower reaches a height of 214 feet.
- Interior :– The complex consists of four main sections: Vimana (Sanctum), Jagamohana (Assembly Hall), Nata Mandapa (Dancing Hall), and Bhoga Mandapa (Offering Hall). Unlike stone or metal, the idols here are made of neem wood, which is replaced every 12 or 19 years (Nabakalevara).
