Detailed History :-
Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, situated on the banks of the Yamuna River in New Delhi, is a magnificent modern cultural, historical, and spiritual complex. This grand temple was formally inaugurated on November 6, 2005. It was constructed under the expert guidance, immense efforts, and blessings of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). Over 11,000 skilled artisans, stone sculptors, and thousands of volunteers from across the globe contributed their invaluable services to bring this colossal project to life. The entire complex is a living testament to the ancient culture, glorious history, rich architecture, and spiritual traditions of Sanatan Dharma, primarily dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan and India’s great sages, saints, and divine incarnations.
Detailed Architecture :-
The architecture of the Akshardham temple is crafted in strict accordance with the rules and principles of ancient Indian Shilpa Shastras and Vastu Shastra. The most remarkable feature of this grand monument is that no concrete, cement, or iron-steel rods were used in its entire construction; it is built entirely from interlocking pieces of Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble.
The main shrine (Garbhagriha) of the temple is breathtakingly beautiful, housing an 11-foot-tall golden idol of Bhagwan Swaminarayan at its center. The lower base of the temple features the ‘Gajendra Pith’, which boasts exquisite carvings of 148 life-sized elephants in various poses, depicting the profound significance of elephants in Indian history, mythology, and nature. The pillars, domes, and walls of the temple are adorned with incredibly fine and intricate carvings, beautifully capturing figures of deities, musicians, dancers, saints, and captivating scenes from nature.
