According to historical and mythological beliefs, the area of today’s Gautam Buddha Nagar has a direct connection with the Ramayana era. While ‘NOIDA’ (New Okhla Industrial Development Authority) is its modern administrative identity, historically, parts of this region were deeply linked to ancient settlements near the Yamuna. Most notably, the village of ‘Bisrakh’ located in this district is believed to be the birthplace of Ravana, named after his father, Sage Vishrava.
During the British era and after independence, this entire area was a part of Bulandshahr and Ghaziabad districts. On June 9, 1997, the Government of Uttar Pradesh carved out portions of Ghaziabad and Bulandshahr to create a new district, naming it Gautam Buddha Nagar in honor of Mahatma Buddha, the symbol of peace and Buddhist culture.
