Nigeen Lake (alternatively spelled as Nagin Lake) is an exquisitely beautiful, serene, and famous lake located in Srinagar, the summer capital of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Historically, Nigeen Lake is considered an extension or an offshoot of the iconic Dal Lake. It is separated from the main body of Dal Lake by a narrow earthen causeway known as ‘Nallah Amir Khan‘. The name ‘Nigeen‘ is derived from the local word meaning ‘the jewel of a ring‘ or a ‘precious gemstone‘. It was given this title because the tall, majestic Chinar and willow trees surrounding the lake encompass it like a beautiful ring holding a gem. During the historical era, this tranquil spot was a preferred retreat for Mughal emperors and later for British administrators seeking isolation and peace. Owing to its significantly lesser crowd and peaceful ambiance compared to Dal Lake, it is a paradise for nature lovers and honeymooners alike.

- Exterior Architecture :– The lake is framed by the snow-capped ‘Hari Parbat’ hillock and its crowning historic fort. Giant, ancient Kashmiri Chinar trees stand tall along its embankments. The lake’s water appears much cleaner and exhibits a deeper blue hue than Dal Lake. A series of traditional Kashmiri wooden houses built on water, known as ‘Houseboats’, line the edges of the lake, giving its exterior layout a majestic, floating look.
- Interior Architecture :– The interior layout of these houseboats is carved entirely out of cedar and walnut wood, showcasing intricate Kashmiri woodwork known as ‘Khatamband’ art.
