Detailed History
Located in Sawai Madhopur, Ranthambore Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in the 10th century (944 AD) by King Sapaldaksha of the Chauhan dynasty. The fort is renowned for its most illustrious ruler, Hammir Dev Chauhan, who sacrificed his life to protect those who sought refuge. During Alauddin Khalji’s invasion in 1301 AD, the first historical ‘Jauhar‘ of Rajasthan took place here. Situated between two hills named ‘Ran‘ and ‘Thambh‘, it is aptly named ‘Ranthambore‘.

Perched on a formidable hill, the fort remains hidden from a distance, leading Abul Fazl to describe it as a ‘Baktarband’ (armored) fort.

- Badal Mahal and Hammir Kachahari :– The architecture here displays a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles.
- Padmala Talao :– This is the historical site within the fort where Queen Rangadevi performed ‘Jal-Jauhar‘.
- Entrance Gates :– The fort features seven massive and strong gates including Naulakha Pol, Hathi Pol, and Ganesh Pol.
