The main attraction of this sanctuary is the ‘Surha Tal’ lake, a massive natural oxbow lake spreading across an area of about 34.32 square kilometers. This historical and natural site was officially declared a bird sanctuary in the year 1991. Later, it was renamed ‘Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary’ in honor of the legendary freedom fighter and people’s leader, Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan, who hailed from this region. For centuries, this lake has been a preferred habitat for various species of indigenous and exotic migratory birds that arrive here every year during the winter season.
